Ingredients

For The Batter:

  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk or homemade buttermilk (2 cups milk + 2 tablespoons vinegar or lemon juice)
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

For The Cinnamon/Sugar Mixture:

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two loaf pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter, 2 cups of sugar, and eggs until well combined. Add buttermilk, flour, and baking soda. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Pour half of the batter (approximately 1/4 in each pan) into the greased loaf pans.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine 2/3 cup sugar with cinnamon to create the cinnamon/sugar mixture.
  5. Sprinkle 3/4 of the cinnamon mixture over the batter in the loaf pans. Add the remaining batter on top, then sprinkle with the rest of the cinnamon topping. Use a knife to swirl the layers gently.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaves comes out clean.
  7. Allow the loaves to cool in the pans for about 20 minutes before removing them. This recipe yields 2 loaves of Amish Cinnamon Bread.
