Ingredients:
- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
- Red pepper (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 1.5-liter (8 by 8 or 9 by 9-inch) baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter and then stir in the flour.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and season with salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
- Simmer the sauce over low heat until it thickens and comes to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat and stir in one cup of shredded cheddar cheese until it’s well combined and smooth.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with a second layer of potatoes and the remaining cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top of the casserole.
- Optionally, add a sprinkle of red pepper for additional flavor and color.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 60-70 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Once done, remove the foil and let it bake for an additional 10 minutes to slightly brown the top.
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your creamy and flavorful Potatoes Scalloped as a delightful side dish!
