Total Time: 1 Hour 45 Minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • Red pepper (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 1.5-liter (8 by 8 or 9 by 9-inch) baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter and then stir in the flour.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk and season with salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  4. Simmer the sauce over low heat until it thickens and comes to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat and stir in one cup of shredded cheddar cheese until it’s well combined and smooth.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with a second layer of potatoes and the remaining cheese sauce.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top of the casserole.
  7. Optionally, add a sprinkle of red pepper for additional flavor and color.
  8. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 60-70 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  9. Once done, remove the foil and let it bake for an additional 10 minutes to slightly brown the top.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your creamy and flavorful Potatoes Scalloped as a delightful side dish!
